Have you chosen your word for 2021 yet? Choosing a word of the year is becoming a yearly tradition–and for good reason! This word is powerful! It’s a word with deep meaning to remind us of what we want to be and ultimately what we want to accomplish. Sound good? Let’s dig deeper.
How Do I Choose a Word For 2021?
Here’s the thing about the word you choose for the year. When you say that word, you will find it’s something you want to achieve, something you want to be, or even a characteristic you want to have. One of the first things in choosing this word is to know what you want to achieve in your life. What are your goals? When you determine what your goals are, you can relate specific words to them. Words that dig at the grass roots of your situation. A word that is a core component of what you want to become.
Whatever word for 2021 you choose, it’s a word you will want to remind yourself of ALL YEAR. This word is like an anchor for what you want to achieve. When you see the word written out or even spoken, that word is going to be a reminder of what you want. It will reinforce your goal intentions. It is a powerful mantra for you to keep working toward. In essence, it is a powerful motivator.
Keep Your Word In The Forefront
When you have this word for 2021 in mind, you will want to keep it “out there”. You will want it to be visible so that every time you do see it, it will be a reminder of your goal. Let’s say your goal is to lose 25 pounds and that your word is “confidence”. Today, you have had an awesome day. You have made healthy food choices, exercised at the gym after work and was complimented by a friend you haven’t seen in awhile on your weight loss. When you opened up your journal to write about your day’s events, you saw your word “confidence” on the front cover. You realized that your efforts towards your weight loss are indeed working and you do have more confidence! More motivation to keep doing what you are doing.
Having your word visible can also give you much needed encouragement that we need from time to time. We know that things don’t always happen the way we want them to. If in this weight loss example, you gave into a craving for ice cream. Instead of ordering the small cone, you ordered a large one and ended up feeling bloated and in the dumps because you felt you couldn’t control yourself. When you open your laptop at home, you see your word “confidence” in big bold letters as your desktop image. It makes you think about all the other examples of confidence you have instilled in yourself and that this “ice cream incident” is a small blip on the radar only. In truth, “you’ve got this!” Your word in effect, instills confidence that you can overcome this small blip and move forward.

Here’s how I chose my word of the year for 2020 and my thoughts behind it: http://byhislightphotography.com/my-2020-word-of-the-year/
Hi Jenn! Yes, having those reminders around can really help anchor you when you really need it! I read your post and I can surely relate to your word “follow thru”. Mine is along the same lines as mine is “clarity”. Having a more organized work-life will help give me focus to move forward in my business. Best of 2020 to you Jenn and your word of the year!
It’s been hard to choose just one! I choose “attentive” because I tend to get stuck in my pre-conceived idea or I get discouraged when things don’t look like I think they “should”. I will be attentive for inspiration or encouragement wherever and whenever they come. I believe this will help me be more creative and be able to think outside the box, yet be more focused….see! I told you it was hard to pick just one!
Picking a word can be hard but when you think of it in terms of your goals, it starts to fit together. Think goals first and then set the word. Your word will come easier then when you know what you are striving for-what you want to become. “Attentive” is an excellent word, BTW! Thanks for stopping by Debbie!
Hello Jenn my word for 2021 is commitment . I think in the past I was never really committed to be healthy but just to lose the extra weight. My goal now is not just to loose the weight but to become and remain healthy .
That is a terrific word to have and congrats on this new vision you have had. It’s definitley one for the long term!
